書家。6歳より書を学び、国内外で多数受賞。2004年より祥洲氏に師事。古典に向きあう日々の中で、空中での筆の軌跡に着目した呼応シリーズが生まれる。 近年は、自身が文字の一部となるHITOMOJIシリーズや、英語を縦書きにする二十一世紀連綿シリーズ等を発表し、書の可能性を追求している。
Rugby World Cup official movie出演、BBC「The Art of Japanese Life」出演、LOEWEコラボレーション、Porsche(ポルシェ) の映像出演、NHK大河ドラマ「八重の桜」のOP映像、JR京都駅「京都」、「阪急嵐山駅「嵐山」、TEDxKyotoでのパフォーマンス、Panasonicの巨大ショーウインドウ、寺院の石碑等、活動は多岐に渡る。

Tomoko Kawao is a Japanese calligrapher. She began her calligraphy study since she was six years old and has been receiving many awards in both Japan and abroad. Since 2004, she has been studying under Mr. Shoshu.
While studying classical calligraphy, she created the “correlation” series, focusing on the trajectory of her aerial brushstrokes. In recent years, she has been exploring the possibilities of future calligraphy by creating the “Hitomoji” series, in which she is a part of characters, and the “21st Century Renmen” series, where she writes English vertically.
Her works appeared in many places including Rugby World Cup official movie, BBC “The Art of Japanese Life”, LOEWE collaboration, Porsche video appearance, the opening film for NHK’s popular historical drama “Yae no Sakura”, “Kyoto” at JR Kyoto Station, “Arashiyama” at Hankyu Arashiyama station, a performance at TEDxKyoto, Panasonic’s huge show window, and a stone monument to a temple.
She is a Professor at Shikoku University and lives in Kyoto.
